this is a legitimate problem in robotics.

like, if you're a bomb disposal guy and your team has a cool bomb-disposal robot which you've given a cutesy name to, you may hesitate to put that robot in harm's way, which is NOT OPTIMAL in the bomb-disposing field.

it also doesn't help if you hold funerals for the robots after they get exploded (this happens pretty regularly).

anyway nobody has worked out how to stop humans from pack-bonding with literally inanimate objects and they probably never will. (like even knowing it's a problem, I *still* think those EOD robots deserve funerals).

In 2007, the US military rejected a multi-limbed anti-mine robot because it's demise was too inhumane.

Ah, I remember seeing a video about Mark Tilden back in the day: he was demonstrating his technique for building “BEAM robotics” in a way that allowed them to adapt to changes to their physical configuration. I remember quite distinctly him being very proud of what was basically a robotic stickbug, and then demonstrating how it continued to operate as he mutilated it beyond repair relative to previous sorts of robots, and I felt that he was being extremely cruel to it.

It's such a little thing, but the 18-point problem stuck in my head like a splinter when I first read about it in middle school.

Choose a point in (0,1). Now choose a second point so that the two points are in different halves of the segment. Now choose a third point so that the three points are all in different thirds of the segment. You might get stuck here, so restart and pick your points more carefully. Then do quarters, fifths, etc.

You can only place 17 points.

No matter how careful you are, you can only place 17 points and the 18th will not work. And this drives me absolutely freaking bonkers, for reasons I cannot explicate.

it still annoys me that there's no generalized analytic form for calculating the circumference of an ellipse, and also that the math for computing the circumference of an ellipse is so complicated that there is an entire branch of cryptography based around it

Circles are incredibly straightforward (so to speak) and there are many ways of deriving the equation for its circumference from first principles.

There is no simple equation for the circumference of an ellipse. Only approximations. Computing it exactly requires extremely advanced calculus.

so ‘egg’ refers to a trans person who has not yet realized they are trans and are in denial. usually one refers to themself in this context. i dont see this happening much to gnc women because its much normaler for a woman to be butch than for a man to be femme. but like.

if you know a man who is more femme. they may very well be a trans woman. and that is for them to figure out on their own. but yall see any man who isnt masc in the slightest bit and go ‘this must be a closeted trans woman’ no. shut up. being a trans woman is more than being a feminine male person. not only do i think youre not normal abt gnc men but i also think you are not normal about trans women.

on my sideblog i saw someone reblog my post about how we should be nicer to butch trans women a cis woman said in the tags “dont egg me but i want to explore masculinity like this” and like. yeah i think we stopped being normal about respecting trans people and instead “i know your gender based on your vibes” and idk. its a weird and niche phenomena but i think its weird and bad.

also don't do this to nonbinary people who were amab (or any nonbinary person). ik this post is mostly about gnc cis people but this kind of thinking also makes people presume that nonbinary people must be Binary Trans in Training (or Cis But Weird) with the end goal of "well you must REALLY be binary." this happens to all nonbinary people but people who were amab are especially erased

also please stop equating GNC with trans or nonbinary, they are all different things
